“A Day in the Park, Night in the City”
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts Returns to Downtown, November 12, 2011
(Phoenix, AZ) Over the last six years, Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts (PAPA) has
become a lauded gathering for personal expression in Phoenix. Join the Office of the
Mayor Phil Gordon, the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, Roosevelt Row and PAPA,
LLC as The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts celebrates it 6th public procession on
November 12, 2011. As a family friendly, 100% participatory event, PAPA is a unique
experience where the community is invited to walk together in a free celebration of
downtown Phoenix. Come celebrate the advent of fall with this signature, award wining
event.
This year’s PAPA, with the theme “A Day in the Park, A Night in the City,” will begin
at 3:00pm in Civic Space Park due to generous support from the Phoenix Parks and
Recreation Department. The pre parade “Day” park party includes puppet making
with Arizona Puppet Guild, float, flag and instrument workshops with the Bergamot
Institute; music, improvisational theater and multicultural dance performances by
local artists; and face painting, balloon twisters and bouncers for the kids provided by
Clownman AZ. Participants who choose to enter the judged contests which include:
best float, best group, best bike, best costume and best “cute (kids and pets)” must
register by 5pm; however, members of the community do not have to register to march.
Lead this year by Internationally recognized stilt walkers Flam Chen and the Valley’s
own Village Blasting Club – FireBrass, the public procession kicks off at 6pm, taking
over the streets with its high energy, pedestrian and bike (no motorized floats permitted
to keep it eco-friendly) tour. Following the procession, the “Night” festival will include
Fire dancers Mourning Fyre, drummers lead by Andrew Ecker and DJ Melo takes the
stage to close out the night. To continue the festive mood, after parties will take PAPA
into several locations in the Roosevelt Row arts district.
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts celebrates the arts and culture that are a vital
part of a metropolitan downtown. PAPA unites the arts with the greater community
by providing an open to the public, mobile expression of downtown Phoenix life. The
free, family event is presented by Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, The Downtown Phoenix
Partnership and the Production Agency for Participatory Arts, LLC. PAPA is a New
Times Best of Phoenix winner.
